When you must act to avoid a collision, how should the action be taken?
- Early, positively, and large enough for the other boater to notice
- At the last moment with a small course change
- Slowly and gradually, so the other boater is not startled by a sudden turn
- Only after sounding five short blasts
Explanation: Rule 8 says avoiding action must be positive, made in ample time and obvious to the other vessel. Small, late or hesitant changes make things worse.

- The front of the boat
- The right side
- The keel
Explanation: The stern (aft) is the back of the boat.
