When you change course to avoid a collision, how should you do it?
  1. Early and boldly, so the other boater can see it
  2. At the last moment with a slight turn
  3. By drifting slowly away from the track
  4. Only after the other boat sounds its horn

Explanation: Avoiding action must be positive and made in plenty of time. Small, late or hesitant changes can be missed by the other boater and may make things worse.

What is the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) used for?
  1. To show foreign authorities that you can handle a boat
  2. To allow a boat to be sold in another country
  3. To prove that a boat is insured abroad
  4. To allow VHF radio to be used overseas

Explanation: Some countries, especially on inland waters in continental Europe, ask visiting skippers to prove their competence. The ICC is the usual document.

Which words introduce a distress call?
  1. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday
  2. Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan
  3. Securite, Securite, Securite
  4. Help, Help, Help

Explanation: Mayday is used when a person or vessel is in grave and imminent danger and needs immediate help.
