When you change course to avoid a collision, how should you do it?
  1. Early and boldly, so the other boater can see it
  2. At the last moment with a slight turn
  3. By drifting slowly away from the track
  4. Only after the other boat sounds its horn

Explanation: Avoiding action must be positive and made in plenty of time. Small, late or hesitant changes can be missed by the other boater and may make things worse.

What must the skipper make sure of regarding lifejackets?
  1. There is one of the right size for every person on board
  2. That only the children have one available
  3. That one lifejacket is shared between the crew
  4. That lifejackets are kept stowed until needed

Explanation: The skipper must carry a correctly sized lifejacket for everyone and make sure they are worn when conditions or the situation call for it. Local bylaws may require wearing them.

Which words introduce a distress call?
  1. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday
  2. Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan
  3. Securite, Securite, Securite
  4. Help, Help, Help

Explanation: Mayday is used when a person or vessel is in grave and imminent danger and needs immediate help.
